Per KRS 161.048(5) Kentucky offers multiple paths for teaching certification and licensure. Veterans who meet the Accelerated Teaching Requirements Pathway, can be issued a provisional certificate for one (1) or two (2) years depending on your teaching pathway. The Veteran teacher can start teaching and over the first 2-3 years provide paid mentorship and official instruction each semester and during the summers.
- Be a Veteran of the Armed forces who was honorably discharged from active duty; confirmed by
- (Form DD214) or National Guard (Form 22); or
- Be a member of the Armed Services currently serving with six (6) years or more of honorable service; including Reserves, National Duty, or active duty.
- Possess a bachelor’s degree or graduate degree;
- A minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.75 on a four point scale
- An academic major or a passing score on the academic content assessment in the area which certification is being sought
- Upon an offer of employment by a school district, the veteran shall receive a one (1) year provisional certificate. During that year, the veteran shall participate in the teacher internship program per KRS 161.030 (5).
- A praxis exam if the degree is not in a content area.
The Veterans to Teachers in Kentucky (VTK) program is a 24-month induction model for all Option 5 teachers pursuing professional teacher certification in Kentucky. All teachers will be required to complete the 24-month cycle, a combination of face-to-face meetings, online meetings, and classroom-based support. The goal of VTK will be to introduce new teachers to the profession while offering practical skills to be successful in the classroom. There are ten (10) standards identified by the Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO) through its Interstate Teacher Assessment and Support Consortium (InTASC).
Pathway #2
The goal is to provide a certification pathway for veterans who possess a trade or skill and have significant experience to certify and become community college/post-secondary CTE instructors. Utilize your military experience and technical skills by teaching today’s youth. Pursue an occupation-based teacher certification through the University of Louisville. KY VALLO has teamed-up with the University of Louisville to offer courses that support vocational education/career and technical education certification through the Kentucky Department of Education’s (KDE) New Teacher Institute (NTI). The New Teacher Institute is a 24-month long program for occupation-based Career and Technical Education (CTE) teachers pursuing professional teacher certification in Kentucky.

What is offered during New Teacher Institute?
The 24-month NTI program offers a combination of face-to-face learning, online assignments, and classroom-based mentor support. While participating in NTI, the teacher is provisionally certified through EPSB. This is a free program to the Veteran other than cost of supplying your transcript and a teaching licensure fee upon completion. You can earn the highest teacher Rank 1 after completing the NTI program if you have your bachelor degree (or higher).
