Kentucky provides transitioning service members with a direct pathway to becoming a firefighter. 

First, contact the fire department of your choosing. Although entrance exams are often required, prior experience is not necessary! As Kentucky’s Fire Departments often value veteran members, entrance exams are frequently weighted to encourage veteran applicants!

Specific application requirements can vary between municipalities.  However, all applicants must have/complete basics requirements in order to be hired-on as a Career Firefighter.

Has obtained their high school diploma or GED

Must be able to read, write, speak, and understand English

Is able to pass a background check

Copy of DD214, if applicable

Is able to pass the Candidate Physical Agility Test

Is able to pass a departmental written exam

Successful completion of 400 hours in-service training

Active certifications such as EMT, AEMT, and Paramedic, are often preferred applicants. However, these certifications may be obtained after hire and are not required prior to application. Many departments will cover the costs associated with obtaining these additional certifications.

Longevity! 
Follow a rank-like promotion schedule to further career aspirations! Many departments test and train internally in order to promote candidates to a higher-level position or offer additional opportunities such as arson investigator, inspector, or fire instructor.
