Examination Requirements
The examination required for licensure shall be the North American Veterinary Licensing Examination (NAVLE) developed by the National Board of Medical Examiners.
The Kentucky VALLO team has identified 35 disciplines/levels of licensure and are working to establish an accelerated pathway for each one. Along with our partners at the University of Louisville and the Kentucky Career and Technical College System, the Kentucky VALLO team has worked diligently to advocate for direct reciprocity of occupational licensures, bridge curriculum for degree completion, and impact state legislation to benefit veteran employment and licensure mobility. Our philosophy states that the shortest pathway for the transitioning veteran is the best pathway. However, we also recognize the diverse needs of transitioning service members and present our career pathways as multi-faceted in order to most effectively cater to veteran career aspirations, levels of prior education, years of service, family/spousal interests, financial needs, time restrictions, location preferences, and employment wishes.
- Passed the NAVLE
- Provide a copy of your examination score report to KBVE.
- Need to take the NAVLE
- Applicants shall apply to KBVE for verification of eligibility.
- Apply to the National Board Examination Committee for Veterinary Medicine for admission to the examination.
The board shall recognize passing scores on the National Board Examination (NBE) and the Clinical Competency Test (CCT) if the applicant for licensure completed both examinations before May 2000.
Jurispridence Exam
Applicants for licensure shall also be required to achieve a score of seventy-five (75) percent or higher on the Kentucky State Board Examination which shall cover the specific requirements of KRS Chapter 321 and the administrative regulations promulgated pursuant thereto.
Veterinarian Fee Reduction for Military Personnel
If a veterinarian applicant submits a copy of his or her DD-214 (or other documentations accepted to the board) with their application of renewal paperwork, the board shall waive or reduce fees as indicated below (201 KAR 16:510 § 16(8)):
| Active Duty | For active duty military, active reserves, and National Guard persons, an individual’s initial application fees ($100), the Kentucky State Exam fee ($100), and the biennial renewal fees ($200) shall be waved. | $0 | |
| Retired: | For retired military personnel with twenty (20) or more years of service, an individual’s initial application fees ($100) shall be waived, and the biennial renewal fees shall be reduces by half (-$100), rounded to the nearest whole dollar. | $200 | |
| Other Veteran: | For any other military veteran, the initial application fees ($100) shall be waived. | $300 |
All other requirements of licensure, including renewal deadlines and continuing education requirements established in 201 KAR 16:590, shall still be met.
