One Veteran’s KY VALOR Story

From Job Rejections to the Right Job

Chelsea was losing confidence after job rejections, with her retirement date fast approaching. A chance meeting at a Fort Campbell job fair led her to KY VALOR, where she found not just a job, but the right one.

Sixty-four resumes. Sixty-four rejections.

That was where Chelsea stood as her military retirement date drew closer. She had the experience. She knew she was qualified. But every application seemed to disappear without a trace.

Then, at a job fair at Fort Campbell, she found KY VALOR. Like many service members, Chelsea expected to leave the military and find work fairly quickly. The reality was very different.

“I was confused, frustrated, and honestly starting to lose confidence in myself and my ability to find a job.”

Her worries were ones we hear often. Would she have a job before her retirement date? Could she find a role that offered the remote work she was looking for? And would she actually be happy in it?

With terminal leave ticking away, the pressure was building.

Chelsea started working with Nicki, VALOR’s Workforce Development Manager, on March 25. Things moved quickly from there:

  1. March 25: First meeting with Nicki.
  2. April 2: Nicki found a position that matched both Chelsea’s goals and qualifications.
  3. April 9: First interview.
  4. End of April: Job offer.

Along the way, Nicki spotted the problem behind all those rejections. Chelsea’s resume wasn’t getting past the AI screening systems many employers now use, simply because of how it was formatted. Hiring managers had never seen it.

“She identified something I never would have known on my own.”

Nicki explained what was happening, worked with Chelsea to fix it, and made sure her experience was finally reaching employers. Not just a job, the right job.

For Chelsea, what mattered most wasn’t only the speed. It was having someone in her corner. Nicki was there for questions, interview nerves, and advice on what to look for in a position. “She didn’t just want to help me find a job. She wanted to help me find the RIGHT job, one where I would be happy, successful, and genuinely enjoy the people I worked with.”

Today, Chelsea works with a team she’s thankful for every day. And the impact reaches beyond one career. Chelsea says the move has given their whole family stability, confidence, and excitement about the future.

“They didn’t make me feel like another resume or another person transitioning out of the military. They made me feel heard, supported, and valued.”

When asked what advice she’d tell others leaving the military, Chelsea didn’t hesitate, “don’t try to do it alone and reach out to KY VALOR right away.”
