Veteran Q&A: How Joshua used his military experience to land an HR role in Kentucky

KY VALOR helped Joshua connect his military experience to HR skills.

When Joshua Lovellette began his search for a Human Resources role in Kentucky, he wasn’t sure how to demonstrate how his experience in the Army translated to the skills employers were looking for. He turned to KY VALOR for help. We not only helped him figure out how to communicate his experience to employers, we also made direct referrals to companies with HR openings he was interested in. Ultimately, we were able to connect Josh with Marsh McLennan, where he was recently hired as a Human Resources Generalist.

What was your experience like with KY VALOR?

I found out about KY VALOR at a Job fair at the University of Louisville. That is where I initially met Nicole Stewart. I also saw her at various other job fairs in the area.

Did you face any challenges finding a job?

Yes, after 24 years in the Army, I had to figure out how to prove that my military experience corresponded to the field I wanted to get into – HR. Nicole and KY VALOR were very helpful in that area. Not to mention sending me potential job opportunities within the areas I was looking for.

What were your biggest concerns transitioning to the civilian workforce? How did KY VALOR address them?

Some of my biggest concerns were finding opportunities that interested me and were within the realm of HR. KY VALOR seems to have contacts throughout the area. They were able to help me find job opportunities, and in most cases, they knew someone within the organization.

What advice would you give to others leaving the military for a civilian career?

Do your research and understand what type of opportunities are available within the field you want to work in. Also don’t be afraid to look at other areas you have never thought of, and ensure you look for opportunities to network.  I will end with, make contact with KY VALOR, they can be an invaluable part of you or network as you transition.

Would you recommend KY VALOR to someone in a similar situation as yours?

All transitioning veterans should sit down with someone from KY VALOR and see how they can assist them. Especially if they plan on staying in Kentucky. They are an invaluable resource, and they have a great network in Kentucky they can put to work helping you to find a position that pays well, and you actually will enjoy.
