What was your experience like with KY VALOR?
I was chatting with a friend who mentioned Kentucky VALOR and it being a great organization/resource.
I reached out and received a response from Maya within a day. The initial intake was about her understanding me as a person. She asked about my background, interests and goals. Additionally she took time to help refine my resume.
Once Maya completed my intake she handed me off to Nicki. Nicki connected me with so many great people who were connected to companies I was interested in. These people took the time to get to know me and help me. This led to tours of different businesses to lunches together and several conversations.
Those experiences helped me feel like I was more than just a resume or words on paper when I decided to apply for a job. It Instead, the companies now had greater insight about who I was and what I believed in. That gave me more confidence in interviews and is ultimately what made the difference in being offered and accepting a job.
Did you face any challenges finding a job?
It was definitely difficult getting my foot in the door prior to working with KY VALOR. I was networking through LinkedIn and my local SHRM chapter but with little success.
What were your biggest concerns transitioning to the civilian workforce? How did KY VALOR address them?
My biggest concern was finding the right job/fit. It was less about the money and more about finding the right work/life balance and the right leadership/team. KY VALOR 100% addressed this by connecting me with the people who could help me get a feel for the company and its values.
What advice would you give to others leaving the military for a civilian career?
It’s never too early to start planning! Organizations like KY VALOR are an invaluable resource and allow you to skip the trial and error of networking and instead be connected with people who are willing and able to help, and in a lot of cases, have walked the same path as you.
